Keisha N. Blain recently discussed with The Washington Post her latest book, co-edited with Ibram X. Kendi, "Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019."
"We've been working very hard to excavate the history in order to help people better write about the history in a way that reflects the richness and the complexity and diversity of the Black experience, but particularly in a way that centers Black agency, which is key, that Black voices appear, that Black ideas appear in these textbooks. [There is] still some work to do. But I think we're making progress. And I think 'Four Hundred Souls' is certainly the kind of text that will help us move forward in that direction."
