Myanmar Faces Backlash over Media Clampdown during Pandemic

As the pandemic rages on, Myanmar is using this opportunity to restrict freedom of media and expression. 

Last month, the Ministry of Transport and Communications blocked over 200 websites accusing them of spreading "fake news" about the pandemic. Civil society organizations are demanding to see the full list of websites blocked, stating that this is an unjustified measure of censorship. Additionally, Myanmar has not lifted its internet blackout that was imposed in nine towns in the northern Rakhine & Chin states late last year. “The Myanmar government is preventing residents of Chin and Rakhine states from being informed on how to take precautionary measures, follow best practices, and prevent the spread of the disease,” warns Carr Fellow Matthew Smith.
