Megan Ming Francis notes that many are surprised by the protests supporting the Black Lives Matter movement in both big cities and rural towns, but the only way you could be surprised is if you don't understand the past.

“The protection of Black lives is the center of what it meant to be free and equal in this country. There’s never been a time in American history that Black lives have been safe from state violence and white vigilante violence. I cannot point you to a decade time span. It just does not exist.”
