DESCRIPTION:\n	Students are invited to a breakfast with National Democratic 
 Institute (NDI) President and former U.S. Ambassador to Burma Derek Mitche
 ll. Ambassador Mitchell will lead an informal discussion with students abo
 ut the role democracy can and should be playing in U.S. foreign policy aro
 und the world\, particularly vis-a-vis China's growing influence. He will 
 draw on his experience working with&nbsp\;Burma at the State Department as
  well as during&nbsp\;his tenure as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary o
 f Defense\, Asian and Pacific Security Affairs (APSA)\, in the Office of t
 he Secretary of Defense.&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n	This event is free and open to the 
 Harvard University student community.&nbsp\;Registration is required (a re
 gistration link can be found at the bottom of this event posting).&nbsp\;
 \n\n\n\n	Derek Mitchell is the third president of the National Democratic I
 nstitute. Mitchell has had a distinguished career in and out of the US gov
 ernment\, in which he has witnessed the connection between democracy and i
 nternational security. From 2012-2016\, Mitchell served as US Ambassador t
 o the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Burma). He was America’s first amb
 assador to the country in 22 years. From 2011-12\, he served as the US Dep
 artment of State’s first special representative and policy coordinator for
  Burma\, with the rank of ambassador. Prior to this appointment\, Mitchell
  served as acting assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific sec
 urity affairs. Mitchell received a master of arts in law and diplomacy fro
 m the Fletcher School at Tufts University and a bachelor’s degree from the
  University of Virginia.\n\n\n\n	This event is cosponsored by the Carr Cent
