 and&nbsp\;former U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter about his decision t

 \n\n\n	About the Speaker\n\n\n\n	Ash Carter currently serves as the Director
  of the Belfer Center at Harvard University's Kennedy School and Innovatio
 n Fellow at MIT. For over thirty-five years Carter served in the Defense D
 epartment. As Secretary from 2015 to 2017\, Carter pushed the Pentagon to 
 “think outside its five-sided box.” He changed the trajectory of the milit
 ary campaign to deliver ISIL a lasting defeat\, designed and executed the 
 strategic pivot to the Asia-Pacific\, established the Department’s and NAT
 O’s new playbook for confronting Russia’s aggression\, and launched the de
 partment’s latest cyber strategy. Carter also spearheaded revolutionary im
 provements to the Department\, developing new technological capabilities\,
  leading the ‘Force of the Future’ initiative to transform the way the dep
 artment recruits\, trains\, and retains quality people\, opening all milit
 ary positions to women\, and building bridges to America’s technology comm
 unity. Carter earned a BA from Yale University and a PhD in theoretical ph
 ysics from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar.\n\n\n\n	About the 
 HKS Gender and Security Seminar Series\n\n\n\n	The Gender and Security Semi
 nar Series\, coordinated by Dara Kay Cohen\, Associate Professor of Public
  Policy\, brings leading experts from academia and the policy world\, work
 ing at the intersection of gender\, human rights\, and security\, to Harva
 rd Kennedy School. Speakers discuss their research in progress or share th
 eir perspectives on current policy debates. The seminar series covers issu
 es of national security during the fall semester and international securit
 y during the spring semester. The series is co-sponsored by four centers a
 t HKS: the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs\, Ash Cente
 r for Democratic Governance and Innovation\, Carr Center for Human Rights\
 , and Women and Public Policy Program.\n\n
